  1. Introduction on Wu Lei Shen Zhou aka Wu Lei Spiritual Mantra (五雷神咒)

    Wu Lei Shen Zhou, translated as the Mantra of the Five Thunder. In Taoism Context, it is also known as Lei Zu Shen Zhou (雷祖神咒), meaning that this Spiritual Mantra is actually a Mantra that is closely associate with Heavenly Lord Pu Hua (雷聲普化天尊).

    In Spiritually-wise, this is a Mantra to call-upon the Positive Energy of Heavenly Lord Pu Hua in-order for him to emit out the Energy to be bestowed onto any Beings while the Beings are in Trouble or facing any form of Life-threatening issues.

    Alot of the Folks thought that this is a Mantra to call upon the Various Thunder Deities or Generals, I cant said that this is wrong but just not that accurate. Once Heavenly Lord Pu Hua is being evoked, he will somehow sent his subodinates or assistants to look into the issues and not necessary to be the Five Types of Thunder Deities that the Folks used to know of.

    So when can one self use this Mantra?

    When one self faces some Strange & Negative Encounters or when one self is not feeling well after visiting places that are related to Negative Entities, such as Funeral, Cemetaries or any Nether World Deities’ Temples, etc.

    How to go about with the Reciting?

    When one self needed to do the reciting, one self just needed to do it according to the following:

    1 Wash one self up and drink a cup of Luke-warm Water

    2 Light 3 Incenses

    3 Walk to any Open-space that you can see the Heaven, at home will be facing the Window

    4 Simply make a Sincere & Respectful Bow to the Heaven

    5 Make a simple Report to the Heaven by saying your name, your address and the problem that you want to solve

    6 Start reciting the Mantra

    7 After finishing, simply make a Bow and leaven the Spot

    Here goes the Mantra:

    無上玉清王。統天三十六。

    Wu Shang Yu Qing Wang. Tong Tian San Shi Liu

    九天普化中。化形十方界。

    Jiu Tian Pu Hua Zhong. Hua Xing Shi Fang Jie

    披髮騎麒麟。赤腳躡層冰。

    Pi Fa Qi Qi Ling. Chi Jiao Nie Ceng Bing

    手把九天氣。嘯風鞭雷霆。

    能以智慧力。攝伏諸魔精。

    768-824 Han Yu opposes Buddhism.

    845 Emperor Tang Wu Zong persecutes Buddhists and all other non-Taoist religions.

    960-1279 During the Song dynasty, Perfect Truth Taoism and Orthodox One Taoism arise and the Taoist canon is edited.

    16th C. San Yi Jiao (Three-in-One Religion) is founded by Lin Long Jiang (1517-98) as a synthesis of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

    1584 Temple of the Three-in-One Religion is built.

    1644-1911 During the Manchu Qing Dynasty, new movements are founded within Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity in China. The Three-in-One Religion is persecuted.

    1851 Hong Xiuquan founds the Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace movement based on Christian ideas.

    late 19th C. Violent clashes between Christian missionaries and the Chinese people.

    1912 China becomes a republic.

    1919 The Fourth of May movement is founded and seeks to stamp out religion using science.

    1920s-30s National Taoist organizations are founded.

  3. The 5 Marshals of Celestial Thunderial Department (雷部五元帥)

    雷 部 五 元 帥 , 指 的 是 九 天 應 元 雷 聲 普 化 天 尊 主 掌 的 雷 部 中 五 名 元 帥 。 雷 部 中 元 帥 很 多 , 一說 雷 部 有 鼓 三 十 六 面 , 各 鼓 均 有 一 名 元 帥 操 持 , 故 有 元 帥 三 十 六 名 ; 一 說 雷 部 有 催 雲 助 雨 護法 天 君 二 十 四 名 , 故 有 元 帥 二 十 四 名 。 雷 部 五 元 帥 就 是 常 見 於 道 教 經 籍 之 中 、 民 間 流 傳 最 廣 、在 一 些 道 觀 中 設 供 奉 的 雷 部 五 名 元 帥 , 即 : 鄧 、 畢 、 劉 、 辛 、 龐 等 五 名 元 帥 。

    These 5 Marshals are the Marshals who assist the Lord Pu Hua of Nine Heavenly Thunderial in the Celestial Thunderial Department.

    In Taoism records, you are able to see many different numbers of Thunderial Marshals, eg: 24 or 36, but for these 5, they are the most commonly seen Marshals in Taoist Temples.

    Here’s the introduction of these 5 Marshals:

    鄧 元 帥 , 名 忠 , 傳 稱 其 「 銀 牙 耀 目 」 、 「 火 焰 繞 身 」 。 《 夷 堅 志 補 》 稱 「 天 元 考 召 鄧 將 軍 」 。 《 鑄 鼎 餘 聞 》 引 明 《 常 熟 私 志 》 稱 「 律 令 大 神 鄧 元 帥 」 , 當 係 職 掌 雷 部 律 令 考 召 之 意 。

    Marshal Deng (Theng Wan Shui), name Deng Zhong. He is the leader of all other Thunderial Marshals in the Department.

    From myth, the outlook of this Marshal shall be like this: round & shiny eyes with sharp eye-sights. Fire flames around his body at all times.
      
    畢 元 帥 , 原 名 田 華 。 據 《 三 教 源 流 搜 神 大 全 》 , 田 華 原 係 雷 精 , 藏 地 中 , 寄 胎 於 田 間 , 得千 年 石 鐘 乳 氣 而 生 。 出 生 時 , 白 晝 晴 空 霹 靂 , 火 光 照 天 , 風 雨 驟 至 。 大 蛇 圍 其 外 , 群 蜂 以 哺 。 及 長 , 因 田 為 田 , 指 華 為 畢 , 修 煉 於 漉 瀘 岩 下 。 女 媧 補 天 不 成 , 畢 元 帥 助 水 火 之 精 , 聲 吼 天地 , 乃 塞 天 漏 。 又 煉 五 色 火 雹 風 雷 陣 , 助 黃 帝 擊 死 蚩 尤 , 被 拜 為 龍 師 。 玉 帝 封 以 雷 門 畢 元 帥 之 職 , 敕 掌 十 二 雷 庭 , 助 玄 天 上 帝 誅 瘟 役 鬼 , 上 管 天 地 潦 涸 , 下 糾 群 魅 出 沒 , 中 擊 不 仁 不 義 等 等 。

    Marshal Bi (Bi Wan Shui), name Tian Bi. According to “The 3 Religious Deities Searching Record”, Tian Bi was recorded as a spirit on Thunder. This spirit was hidden under a ground in a plot of plantation only born after accumulating the natural energy from a thousands years old stone bell.

    At the time of his birth, dark night was lit by natural ray, storm started, snakes curl around him and bees will at the plantation to feed him with the nutrients.

    After growing up, he helped Nu Wa in mending the hole in the heaven and helped Huang Di in killing Chi You.

    Soon after, he was appointed by Jade Emperor as the leader of the 12 other Celestial Thunderial Sections.
      
    劉 天 君 , 名 后 , 東 晉 時 人 。 生 於 岷 江 漁 渡 中 , 幼 時 落 波 心 而 不 死 。 因 貧 , 送 於 羅 真 人 為 侍 讀 , 因 精 於 五 雷 掌 訣 , 能 招 風 捉 雨 , 隨 叩 即 應 , 濟 民 助 國 。 是 年 東 京 大 旱 , 皇 帝 禱 於 劉 天 君 祠 , 果 有 大 雨 。 時 秋 大 稔 。 皇 帝 敕 命 其 為 「 立 化 慈 濟 真 君 」 。 玉 皇 大 帝 亦 命 劉 天 君 職 掌 雷 部 王 府 的 各 種 事 務 。

    Marshal Liu (Lau Thien Khun), name Liu Hou, born in Jin Dynasty.

    At young age, he studied under Master/Immortal Luo. During the stay with Master Luo, he mastered the magical skill of Wu Lei Zhang (Palm of 5 Thunder).

    After Marshal passed away, he was appointed by Jade Emperor as one of the leaders to take care of other tasks in the Thunderial Section.
      
    辛 元 帥 , 原 名 辛 興 , 字 震 宇 , 雍 州 人 。 據 《 三 教 源 流 搜 神 大 全 》 , 雍 州 地 界 有 神 雷 山 。 辛 興 之 母 即 為 神 雷 山 霹 靂 破 膽 而 死 。 辛 興 抱 母 屍 而 哭 。 雷 神 感 其 至 孝 , 變 化 為 道 士 而 謝 罪 , 並 贈 辛 興 十 二 火 丹 以 啖 之 。 辛 遂 易 形 , 妖 其 頭 , 喙 其 嘴 , 翼 其 兩 肩 , 左 執 尖 , 右 持 槌 , 腳 踏 五 鼓 。 玉 皇 大 帝 封 其 為 元 帥 , 與 畢 元 帥 「 共 五 方 事 , 往 來 行 天 , 翦 幽 冥 中 邪 魔 鬼 惡 」 。 傳 說 六 月 十 五 日 為 辛 元 帥 神 誕 之 日 , 奉 祀 雷 神 的 道 教 徒 於 是 日 茹 素 , 稱 為 「 雷 齋 」 , 以 祈 神 佑 。

    Marshal Xin (Xin Wan Shui), name Xin Xing or Xin Zheng Yu.

    According to “The 3 Religious Deities Searching Record”, Xin Xing was a folk who lived near the “Mountain of Thunder God”. One day, when a thunder strike near the Mountain, Xin Xing’s mother was scared to death, after Xin Xing noticed that his mother had passed away, he cried over his mother’s died body.

    Upon hearing the crying of Xin Xing, Thunder Deity was moved by Xin Xing’s filial piety and transformed himself into a Taoist form, in-order to pass Xin Xing 12 spiritual pills in return for the causing of his mother’s death.

    After Xin Xing swallowed the pills, he was transformed into a “bird” form, from then, he was summoned to Celestial Palace and Jade Emperor appointed him as one of the Marshals.

    He was put in-charge of getting rid of demons and evil spirits in the Nether World.
      
    龐 元 帥 , 原 名 龐 喬 , 字 長 清 。 據 《 三 教 源 流 搜 神 大 全 》 , 龐 喬 家 境 貧 困 , 世 為 駕 渡 之 工 。 但 龐 喬 心 行 善 良 , 對 往 來 渡 客 無 不 平 等 , 救 人 急 難 。 玉 皇 大 帝 聞 其 至 孝 至 誠 , 敕 為 混 氣 元 帥 , 手 執 金 刀 , 唯 天 門 之 出 入 是 命 , 以 降 陰 魔 , 除 舊 惡 , 秋 毫 不 爽 。
      
    一 些 大 道 觀 常 有 設 天 將 殿 堂 , 供 奉 雷 部 元 帥 或 其 他 天 將 。 其 中 由 於 各 地 道 教 徒 的 地 方 文 化 歷 史 背 景 的 差 異 , 因 此 供 奉 元 帥 之 名 號 以 及 數 量 可 能 有 所 不 同 。 但 是 以 雷 部 元 帥 作 為 護 法 神 靈 , 救 難 神 靈 祈 求 確 是 一 致 的 。

    Marshal Pang (Phang Wan Shui), name Pang Qiao or Pang Chang Qing.

    According to “The 3 Religious Deities Searching Record”, Pang Qiao was a righteous man who always handled things fairly.

    After Jade Emperor noticed Pang Qiao, he was appointed as one of the Marshals.

    He was put in-charge of the Heavenly Gate and warding off demons and evils.

    According to record found in a cave in Tian Shan (Mountian Tian), this bell is able to destroy the World.

    Zither of Emperor Fu Xi

    Emperor Fu Xi uses Jade stone and Heavenly silk to create this Zither. This Zither is believed to have the abilities of controlling Living kinds’ mind.

    Sword of Emperor Xuan Yuan Huang Di

    This sword was given to Xuan Yuan Huang Di during the battle with Chi You. This sword is believed to have the ability to subdue Demons and get rid of Evils.

    神农鼎

    Urn of Emperor Shen Nong

    AKA “World Creation Urn”. In the past, this Urn was used by Shen Nong to make different types of Medicine. After years of accumulating the extract of medicine, this Urn is believed to have powerful ability to create magical elixirs.

    Seal of Kong Dong

    A seal that belongs to the Longevity Dragon Group in Sea of Kong Dong.

    The seal was engraved with the pictures of the 5 Lords of the 5 Directional Heavens. In the past, people believed that, the person who grab hold of this seal, will be able to lead the whole World.

    Nu Wa Stone

    This stone was created by Nu Wa (Mother of All Living Kinds) in-order to save her daughter. She uses the 5 colours Stones (used during the mending of hole in the Sky) to create this Nu Wa Stone. The stone is believed to have the power of making a person re-alive.

  5. The 7 Holiness items that Chinese used/believed (中華信仰七大聖物)


    水推崇為“五行”之一、“三官”(指道教所奉的天官、地官、水官)之列,人們對水的敬畏幾乎達到了與天地並重的程 度。與此同時,水之於人,
    如夏曆正月初一早上汲取的井水與河水,稱“銀水” 或“財水”;在夏曆除夕守歲至半夜,打起燈/悄悄去汲取河水的,稱“天地水”,可保來年大吉等等。而特別日子/的水還有其特別功能:穀雨日所收露水,用來圖符並貼在牆上,有厭勝諸毒作用;農曆四月 初八日所收露水用於磨墨,書寫咒語於紅紙上,再貼在牆上,可攘蝗災;又如端午日赤足瞠露,可攘災厄;夏曆八月初一“六神水”所收露水以調朱熆I灸,可祛百病,等等。當然這些功效不是我們今天要討論的主題,今期的主題是避邪水可治病招魂。俗信以為各種經過特定條件處理的水,有治病神效。如巫祝之流在水上畫過符策後,稱“符水”,或以清水祭神並加祝\後,稱“咒水”、“神水”、“聖水”等,皆能療疾。天上下雨,以器皿接取後,謂“無根水”,用之煎藥有效。此外。俗信又以為小孩生病不愈,乃魂魄走失所致,也可借水的法力召回。如“過水”之法,是於夜半焚香祝\後,再抱上病孩,偷偷尋 一條小河膛過,再上岸時,魂已歸體,病可愈。再如“叫魂”之法,是于天黑後端清水一碗,出門去沿路呼喚,視水中一起泡,便是魂已歸附,端碗回家放在病童枕邊,病可愈,等等。

    Water in Chinese context can consider as a Holy and important item.

    Different type of water (collected at different period or timing) will have their individual ability in helping the people.


    灰,在中國神秘文化體裏,灰居然也是用途廣泛的法寶。篤信灰有法力的觀念,其來源大概也可以從現實生活中尋溯:古代文獻中,人們播灰作肥、積灰止水或揚灰助戰之類的記載很多。累積之後,是很可能將其功力作超效驗的廣泛化的。 此外,遠從先秦以來,就有不少被後世歸為道家者流的人士,都或隱或顯地試圖證明:物體經燃燒成為餘燼後,僅僅是形狀的改變,其精魄仍聚積在灰裏。依循這種觀念,寓有精魄的灰具有某種法力,也就順理成章了。過去常把“搓骨揚灰”的動作與“斬盡殺絕“的意圖聯繫起來,其本意亦在於精魄在灰中,分撒開後,就可以阻擾其聚合的目的。 用灰去祈\幸福平安的功效就不在這介紹了,我們關心的是灰是怎麼驅邪的。早在《周禮•秋官》中,即有“赤龍氏掌除牆屋,以蜃炭攻之,以灰灑毒之”及“煙氏掌去無視,焚牡霸,以灰灑之”等制度,就是用灰來攻除蟲富。以後,在宅中撒灰成為一種流行很廣的民間風俗,“驅五毒”、“打灰簸箕”等各種名目,多於夏曆二月初二、五月初五前進行。撒灰時要念咒語,亦有畫灰於地作鳥獸狀的。傳中的撒灰活動,還由驅逐毒蟲演變為寬泛的驅疫辟邪方術,甚至有夜深人靜時畫灰於道,作弓矢形狀,以求射崇攘災的。有些地方還有給小孩鼻尖上抹鍋灰的習俗,據說也是為了壓邪逐鬼。

    Ash

    Eventhough ash is the remaining of burning items, but the abilities of ash are more than what we usually know.

    In Pre-Qin Dynasty, folks believed that eventhough an item had been burnt off, but the spirit of the item will still retain in the ashes.

    Records in Zhou Dynasty also shown that, folks in the period do view ashes as an important item.

    In folks culture, ashes are usually used to get rid of insects on the plantation and some, are used to ward off evils.

    石頭
    普通的石頭能成為法寶,其觀念上的依據,是古人的靈石崇拜意識,這裏僅就其避邪的適用範圍和操作形式作些介紹。敦煌寫卷中有《用石鎮宅法》,雲:“凡人居宅處不利,有疾病、逃亡、耗財,以石九十斤,鎮鬼門,大吉利;人家居宅已來,數亡遺失錢不聚,市買不利,以石八十斤,鎮辰地大吉。”所謂“鎮”,就是照堪輿家指定的方位,埋下一塊石頭。 鎮墓。即造墓時埋石為祭,理由與鎮宅相同,但受惠物件則是亡者親屬,延及子孫後代。鎮巷。如住宅大門正對裏巷(道路)、橋樑或別人家的屋角,俗信以為將有“邪沖”。

    Stones (referring to natural stones)

    Normal stones can be used as a Spiritual item against all strange issues. The believes in stone can track back to stone-age period or pre-civilization period, where folks worship stones as Deities.

    In records, certain weightage for stones will have certain spiritual impact to human or homes.

    雞狗都是家養禽畜,但是在古人觀念中,它們的來歷非尋常動物可比。緯書《春秋\鬥樞》稱“玉衡星散為雞”,《春秋考異集》則謂“狗,鬥精之所生也”。如此秉賦,是與人們將它們身上的某些部份作為法寶用有直接聯繫的。狗血作為辟惡破妖的法寶,《史記》中已有記載。秦始皇殺狗課四門以禦凶災便是一例。此後,殺狗塗血於門戶上,一直是民間辟除不祥或抵禦邪惡的基本方式之一。俗信又以為狗血雞頭是化解妖氣的最簡便辦法,特別是雄雞頭,黑狗血更具功效。倘遇上“妖人”使用法術,如剪紙為馬、撒豆成兵時,也可將狗血潑去,破其妖術。 民俗中雞血與狗血共同使用以厭妖邪的現象也很普遍。

    Rooster’s Crown and blood of dog

    Since the Chun Qiu warring States, these 2 animals have been treated differently with the others. In Qin Dynasty, Emperor Shi Huang did ever used blood of dogs to ward off evils or so.

    The blood of dog and blood from Rooster’s crown are believed to have the power of warding off un-wanted entities.

    小豆

    小豆的神通首先在於辟瘟避疫。如《雜五行書》雲;“常以正月旦,亦以辟疫病甚靈驗。正月七日,七月七,男吞赤小豆七顆,女吞十四枚,經無病,令疫病不相染。”顯然,這種有時講究、男女區分等條件的小豆施術,並不是藥物上的觀念。再如《歲廣記》曰:“立秋日,以秋水吞赤小豆十粒,止赤白痢疾”,其理相同。還有接指認赤小豆就是厭鬼物的說法,《歲時雜記》雲:“共工氏有不才子,冬至日死為疫鬼,畏赤豆,故是日作豆粥厭之。”此前我們已知,服赤豆限於冬至,凡正旦、元宵、七夕、立秋均有眼之辟疫的靈驗,原來它正是.“疫鬼”最害怕的東西。這個傳說不但在中國很流行,而且在流傳到朝鮮半島和日本列島即使在今時今日,在那裏的民俗中也廣有”撒豆驅鬼“的行為,只是所驅的鬼各有不同而已。

    Beans

    In records, all beans that are edible for human are consider as having certain spiritual ablities. Such beans include, red, green, black, white, soya, peanut and so.

    This culture doesn’t stay in China only, but being spread to Korean and Japan.

    桃木
    桃木亦名“仙木”。是用途最為廣泛的伐邪制鬼材料。桃木所以具有這等神力,根植于古人認定桃樹為百鬼所懼的神秘觀念。在古代文獻的記載和解釋裏,這種觀念的依據大致有三種類別。因為和主題無關,所以就不詳敘了。本段主要講述的是發揮桃木伐邪鎮鬼功能的方式:1) 桃板。亦稱“桃版”、“桃符”、.“桃符板”等,系用桃木削成的厭勝物.成對使用。板上畫上神荼兄弟(傳說中的驅鬼之神)的像,使之壓邪。當然,眾所周之,後來漸漸演變成現在的“春聯”“對聯”了。2) 桃印。亦名“桃印符”,用桃木刻成的印鈕,塗以紅、藍、黃。白、黑五色並寫有辟邪咒語,鈕間穿孔。逢端午節時,單只使用,方式是用彩絕將桃印系在門上或帳屏間,起驅凶攆鬼的作用。3) 桃役。用桃木做成的佩飾性厭勝物,瓜形,多棱,刻有銘文,內容多祈福壤災乏辭。使用方式是夏曆正月佩戴在身上。從《韓詩外傳》記述可知,此俗在春秋時已經風行,後來的桃木制剛卯,是其遺制。4) 桃人。亦名“桃梗”、“桃偶”,用桃樹梗刻成的厭勝物。狀如人形,大小隨意。使用方式是夏曆除夕或正旦時,立於門側,以辟凶邪。從《莊子》、《戰國策》等書的記述中可知,此俗在戰國時已流行。有些地區的民間建宅習俗中,也派桃人的用處,方式是在門牆上或樑柱間開個小洞,放個小批人.過去,再封住,認為可辟凶鬼,保住宅院的安定。5) 桃核。截取桃樹上的枝杈,毋需加工,就是現成的鎮鬼物。《莊子》上 說,在家門口插上挑枝,兒童進門不害怕,鬼卻因此生畏卻步。此外,古人還用桃枝洗澡,以為可避邪氣。6) 桃弓。又名“桃弧”,用桃木製成弓形厭勝物,和棘制的箭形慶勝物配套使用。《左傳•昭公四年》記有“桃弧棘矢,以除其災”的儀式,“災”之含義,似比鬼的概念還要寬泛些。7) 桃□。用桃木棍和禾穗複合製成的法寶,狀如答帚。《左傳》、《禮記》和《周禮》等書上,均有用桃熱拔除不祥的記載。桃前的使用場合,致有臨喪弔唁和殺牲取血兩大類。古人認為死人的事鈧是與鬼魂之類相關聯的,憑弔死人前,須用鎮物,方可確保活人不受侵害,而桃前便有這種鎮鬼的威力。殺牲取血為盟誓用,然而也怕有不祥,桃前起到被除的作用。古時候,手執桃前做拔除工作的,多為巫視等官員,但後來挑前漸漸變成了道土的法器,也就是拂塵的前身了。 桃木劍。這個應該是大家最熟的用途了用桃木削制的“捉鬼”或“斬鬼”的法寶,和“桃印符”、葦索等配套使用,這已是“牛鼻道人”之類手中的物事了,但取義源于古人篤信桃木有鎮鬼的神力。9) 桃湯。《荊楚歲時記》裏有正月初一飲桃場以避邪氣的描寫,究竟是用桃子抑或桃膠、桃木熬場,今已無考。此外,民間巫祝之禁劾方術中,還有用桃場洗澡以解鬼迷的辦法。

    Tao Mu (translated as Peach Wood)

    This is one item that Feng Shui and Chinese Religious believed the most.

    Such type of wood is believed to have very strong spiritual abilities in helping human and also immortals.

    In Chinese records (almost every Dynasties), it is not difficult to find records on the usage of Tao Mu.

    Since 1800s, cultures of Tao Mu have being “imported” to the Western Countries. Today, the Eurasians do used Tao Mu in certain ceremonies.

    銅鏡
    在重多法寶中,銅鏡的驅邪能力是最強的。古代中國人長期使用銅鏡,銅鏡不僅是照面的器具和工藝品,也是一種兼有多樣功能的法寶。銅鏡的法力從何而來,古人的種種解釋多與其製作者相聯繫。銅鏡的神明妙用,首先在於它能“觀照妖魁原形”。如葛洪《抱樸子》言,世上萬物久煉成精者,都有本事假託人形以迷惑人,“惟不能易鏡中真形”,它們一看見銅鏡,也就暴露了自己的本來面目,於是趕快溜走。基於這一原理,凡巫視道冠一流在從事捉鬼妖等活動時,照例都要先用一面鏡子當識破妖怪的法寶,其時鏡子乍現,妖怪就逃之夭夭了。順此思路,照妖鏡又成了應用廣泛的禁劾物,比如古代武士甲胄的後背或前胸部位,多嵌有一塊“護心鏡”,一方面,鏡材的銅質本身具有抵禦劍矢之類武器侵害的作用,而另一方面,它們又可以發揮鎮嚇諸多鬼怪妖物的功能;再比如,把一塊小圓鏡鑲在大門頂端中間部位的民居建築習俗,在中國許多地區盛行,甚至直到今天,這塊具有鎮邪驅怪意義的古老的禁刻物,還常常出現在現代風格的建築物上,只不過鏡子的材料已由熟銅變成了玻璃。又比如,在傳統的婚禮風俗中,銅鏡是使用場合和次數最多的祛邪工具,新娘穿著有銅鏡的新衣上轎去婆家;在花轎進入婆家大門前,還要由專職人員用銅鏡在轎廂內上下左右仔細地“搜尋”一遍;用作合晉的洞房裏,一面大銅鏡是絕對不可缺少的器物。此外,銅鏡也被使用在民間喪葬活動中,人們將其置於墓穴頂部,或棺床的四角,這些安排均出於辟邪的需要。

    Bronze Mirror is believed to have the most strongest abilities in warding off evils and negative energies.

    In Feng Shui and Chinese Religious, the percentage of the usage of Mirrors is an enormous count. From this, we can see that, almost all Chinese with Spiritual believes do rely on Mirror a lot.

    Not only used in Spiritual rituals, Mirror in death culture and wedding culture of Chinese also being widely used.

  6. Uses of Candles (道教之供燈)

    燈為何物﹖

    “燈” 即是”燭” 。

    在神案上點燃”燈” ﹐人們便可向神明祈求平安及光明。願一切事物在神明的大道光芒下﹐能時時事事順利。

    What is Candle (Lamp) used for?

    Many people again have this thinking of Deities need Candles as their food, in-order to give them energy, etc, actually this is very in-accurate and mis-leading. Why shall a Deity be fed on Candles and Incenses since he/she is already out from the 6 Realms Reincarnation?

    Candle (Lamp), a significant of Brightness.

    When a devotee offered his/her Candles (Lamp) to the Deities, he/she will be somehow blessed by the Deities for “brightness” in his/her future and the most important – smoothness on whatever he/she does.

    This may sounds a bit superstitious, but according to records and practices from other Religions all over the World, Candles do have such a meaning.

    So what type of Candles shall we offered?

    For Chinese (Taoism), usually we will prefer RED color, a color of Prosperity and Luck and also to represent Happiness and Reunion. Whereas for Buddhism, people tend to offer Yellow or sometime White for purity.

    Nowadays, we can see lots of new form Candles on the market. Such as Lotus, Pineapple, Ingots shape, etc, all are fine, as long as we have the sincerity and beware of the safety-ness during the using of such Candles.

  7. Uses for Incense (香)

    香為何物﹖

    “香”” ﹐一種讓人們與神明溝通的管道。

    在祭祀中﹐人們只要在點燃“香” 之後﹐心中祝念﹐誠心祈求﹐“香” 所發出的裊裊香煙便會將人們所祈求的願望“傳達” 至神明前。

    What are Incenses (joss-sticks) for?

    Many people have tend to mix up the idea of Ghosts eating joss-sticks with the offering of Incenses to the Deities, actually this is not accurate.

    And then why must a person offer Incenses infront of the Deities? Is it to bride the Deities? Or trying to “force” the Deities by agreeing on the requests that one person requested, if not he/she will used the smoke to “suffocate” the Deities?

    Ha ha, of-cos all NO. The real significant behind that is:

    Incenses are used as a form of “media” for human to communicate with the Deities (in today’s language – One Way Mobile). By lighting the incenses, standing infront of the statues and making requests, the smoke of the incenses will somehow “help to transmit” one person’s message to the Deities.

    With this reason, a lot of people tend not to get the new type of incenses that won’t give out smoke.

    But, since we are all living in this planet, we also shall think for the others, try not to get those which give out thick smoke, this will not only cause pollutions but also a form of dis-respect to the Deities.

    無極無量法 無量度眾生 無極無量光

    照出諸魂眾 一切冤家鬼 盡離地獄中

    天尊說經已畢 若誦此經 隨力見功 酌水獻花

    其福自應 家有此經 宅舍光明 災難無侵

    2 sticks: for newly pass-on/Nether World Deities

    3 sticks: for all Deities, represent 3 Cai – Tian (Heaven), Di (Earth) & Ren (Mortal)

    4 sticks: not used

    5 sticks: for paying respect to the 5 Directional Marshals (inner and outbound)

    6 sticks: not used

    7 sticks: used for inviting Nether World Deities or Hell Generals

    8 sticks: not used

    9 sticks: represent the MAX number in the Universe, usually used when urgent issues involved

  10. Simple steps of Offering Incense “插香禮節”

    插香禮節:

    1 拿香時,左手在外,右手在內。

    2 廟前天公爐要先焚香朝拜,再來拜中間的主神,再拜你的右邊(以左青龍)神明、然後再拜左邊神明(右白虎)

    3 插香時,一般以左手插之,表示尊敬與和平。

    Simple steps of Offering Incense:

    1. While holding on to incenses – left hand grabbing onto right hand

    2. Offered your incenses to the Urn that is dedicated to Jade Emperor 1st (usually at the outer courtyard of the temple)

    3. While inside the temple, always pay your respect to the Deities in the centre altar 1st (they consider as the Main Deities in the temple), follow by the Deities on your right-side (2nd highest ranking in the temple, for Chinese, we consider it as the “Big Position”) and then the altar on your left-side

    4. While placing the incenses into the Urn, you must used your left hand – reasons: showing respect to the Deities and, requesting for blessing of Peacefulness

  14. Choosing an Urn (選對一個好香爐)

    How to choose a more accurate Incenses Urn (Holder)?

    Many people have been asking, “What are the suitable types of Urn that we shall buy for our Altar at home?”, “Are there any differences for Urns dedicating to Deities and Ancestors, etc?”

    My answer is Yes.

    So what are the differences?

    Firstly, Deities and Ancestors can never share the same Urn.

    Secondly, the different materials that used to make the Urn for Deities and Ancestors.

    Thirdly, Heavenly Deities’ Urn, Tu Di Gong’s Urn and, if there’s any, Nether World Deities’ Urn also must be separated and the materials used are also different.

    So, let us start with the basic – choosing an Urn.

    When you reach a shop that sells Urns, firstly, explain carefully to the assistant of the shop that you are getting an Urn for who (an experience assistant will know how to introduce the type of Urns to you upon your request), usually they will get the correct one for you.

    If they don’t, then you will have to look out for yourself.

    Firstly: Material

    For Deities, always choose those made of Metal (for Buddhism, can choose Crystal/Jade Urn).

    For Ancestors, always get those made of Porcelain, if not, glass or clay.

    For Tu Di Gong and Nether World Deities, same as for Ancestors.

    Secondly: Outlook

    For Deities, always choose an Urn with the “Ears” on it and 3 Legs supporting the Urn.

    How the Ears look like?

    Usually they are in the form of Lion Head, same will be Dragon Head, or some, biting onto a ring (for carrying) – refer to Picture One.

    So what’s the meaning for that?

    The Urn’s Ears represents the continuity of the Family Line (Generations). In the past, it’s a taboo of not getting Urns with “Ears”, usually when the elders found out that the Urn is “Ear-less”, they will usually request for a Change.

    The 3 Legs, the Transformation of 3 Generals/Demons who are “chosen” to carry the Urn for the Deities.

    For Ancestors (Tu Di, Nether World Deities), we will usually choose Urns made of other Material besides Metal and also, no Ears attached to it – refer to Picture Two.

    NOTE: To get an Urn with Heavy/Steady Base (This will help to bless the Family with smooth and steady Future/Luck).

    After getting the Urn, how shall we get going with it?

    Usually at the shop, after you decide on which Urn to buy back, the assistant will wrap it up with Red paper (as a form of respect, no other meaning), for some good shops, they will even give up a pack of 5 Grains (5 Color Beans) or the 7 Gems/8 Treasures – for the enhancing of the Urn use.

    After getting the Urn, try not to go somewhere else to shop, return home immediately.

    Upon reaching home, placed the wrap up Urn at a high level area, do not allowed others to touch it till the day of Enhancing of the Urn (Auspicious Day).

    So who shall be engaged for the Enhancing of the Urn?

    Nowadays, many people will tend to engage Feng Shui Masters or Mediums to do the Enhancing.

    But, if you are able to afford it, engaged a Taoist Priest to perform the Ritual, cos at the same time, the Priest might be able to conduct the Dotting of Statues Ceremony for you.

    So after the Enhancing of the Urn, what shall be done?

    After that, the burning of Incenses shall continue for at least 3 days. Reason, to keep the Xiang Huo (Continuity of Past, Current and Future Blessings) going non-stop.

    But we can’t get hold of such a “LONG” Incense?

    Ha ha, good question. Get those “Pagoda Incenses” – coiled up Incense, this will be able to last a longer period, keep changing it or adding on to it before it stop burning.

    NOTE: Beware of the ashes, some dropped ashes can cause Fire, during these 3 days, arranged for someone to be at home looking after it.

    Ma Zu’s (Goddess of the Sea) birthday is around the corner.

    精妖鬼怪 千狀萬端 有諸眾生 或以興商買賣 

    採寶求珍 出使遐荒 交通異域 外邦進貢 

    上國頒恩 輸運錢糧 進納貢賦 舟船往復 

    風水不便 潮勢洶湧 驚濤倉卒 或風雷震擊 

    雨雹滂沱 其諸鬼神 乘此陰陽變化

    翻覆舟船 損人性命 橫被傷殺 無由解脫

    以致捉生代死 怨怒上衝 合由救免 

    於是

    廣救真人上白   

    天尊曰 斗中有妙行玉女 於昔劫以來 修諸妙行 

    誓揚正化 廣濟眾生 普令安樂 

    於是

    天尊乃命妙行玉女 降生人間 救民疾苦 乃於甲子之歲 

    三月二十三日辰時 降生世間 生而通靈 長而神異 

    精修妙行 示大神通 救度生民 願與一切含靈 

    解厄消災 扶難拔苦 功圓果滿 白日上升 土神灶主 

    奏上三天

    於是 

    老君敕下

    輔斗昭孝純正靈應孚濟護國庇民妙靈昭應弘仁普濟天妃

    於是天妃 聽宣法音 弘是願言 自今以後 若有行商坐賈 

    買賣求財 或農工伎藝 種作經營 

    或行兵布陣 或產難不分 或官非撓聒 或口舌所侵 

    多諸惱害 或疾病纏綿 無有休息 

    但能起恭敬心 稱吾名者 我即應時孚感 令得所願遂心 

    所謀如意 吾常遊行天界 遍察人間 以致地府泉源 

    江河海上 一切去處 令諸所求悉遂願 於是廣救真人 

    聞是願言 

    稽首歸依 而說偈曰  

    敕封輔斗 顯跡威靈 飛符走印 總領天丁

    收捕奸盜 斬滅妖精 夫危濟險 護助天兵

    邪魔永殄 疾病安寧 敬順者泰 橫逆者傾

    厭息火盜 斷絕邪冥 東西南北 四方肅清

    神威震肅 家國咸寧 英烈天妃 善慶明時 

    遊行三界 遍察靈衹 風雷衛護 兵將維持 

    中臨人世 為殄災非 下通地府 遍告神司

    枉橫者戮 殺人者誅 施人者愛 謀人者追 

    一心歸仰 萬物咸熙 急急如律令 

    爾時 

    天妃聞說偈已 稽首天尊道前 而說誓言

    一者誓救舟船達于彼岸

    二者誓護客商咸令安樂

    三者袪逐邪祟永得消除

    四者蕩滅災迍定門清淨

    五者搜捕奸盜屏跡潛形

    六者收斬惡人誅鋤強梗 

    七者救民護國民稱太平

    八者釋罪解愆離諸報對

    九者扶持產難母子安全

    十者庇護良民免遭橫逆

    十一者衛護法界風雨順時

    十二者凡有歸向保佑安寧

    十三者修學至人功行果滿

    十四者求官進職爵祿亨通

    十五者過去超生九幽息對

    是時老君聞天妃誓言 乃敕玄妙玉女 

    賜以無極輔斗助政普濟天妃之號 

    珠冠雲履 玉珮寶圭 緋衣青授 龍車鳳輦

    佩劍持印 前後導從 部衛精嚴 黃蜂兵帥

    白馬將軍 丁壬使者 檉香大聖 晏公大神

    有千里眼之察奸 順風耳之報事 青衣童子

    水部判官 佐助威靈 顯揚正化 世間若有男女 

    恭敬信禮 稱其名號 或修齋設醮 

    建置道場 或清淨家庭 或江河水上 轉誦是經一遍 

    乃至百遍千遍 即得袪除災難 殄滅邪魔 疾病自痊 

    官災永息 行兵臨陣 凶惡自離 囚獄之中 

    自然清泰 賊寇不侵 惡言無害 田蚕百倍 

    牛畜孳生 財祿盈餘 經營獲利 行商坐賈 

    採寶求珍 海途平善 無諸驚恐 求官作事 遂意稱心 

    是時  

    天尊說是經畢 天龍鬼神 咸願護持 

    於是

    廣救真人 復說偈曰 

    金闕聖后 敕封輔斗 天人顯跡 嶽瀆毓秀

    三月建辰 下弦應候 護國靈長 嵩呼萬壽

    何福不臻 何難不救 與道合真 玉皇眷佑

    依經轉誦 魔靈束首 燒香散花 修齋設醮

    應有急難 即當虔告 如法受持 無不應驗

    急急如律令

    真后斗仙 位列九天 上佐金闕 下及泉源

    七元使者 道合自然 人間皈依 福報無邊

    昊天罔極 降福綿延 英烈天妃 應感無方 

    人間天上 咸敬其名 貞風顯佑 國土清平 

    臣今遵奉 永保利貞

    是時 廣救真說是偈已 妙行天妃稽首

    天尊奉辭而退 三界靈衹 天龍神鬼 咸生歡喜 信受奉行

    輔斗真人 感應化生 一符一水 救濟萬民

    除災去障 永保安寧 急急如律令

    齊天聖后 北斗降身 三界顯跡 巨海通靈

    神通變化 順濟稱名 三十二相 相貌端成

  16. Introduction on Taoist Spiritual Mantra on Ceasing Rain – Qi Qing Shen Zhou (祈晴神咒)

    In here, is one the few Taoist Spiritual Mantras that being used to request for the ceasing of Rain Pour or Storm.

    In the Ancient Era, when an area is being disturbed by long period of Rain Pour or Strong Storm (which disturbed the on-going agricultures, farm works, etc), the people will gathered together to engage several Taoist Priests or Taoist Masters to perform the Ritual of requesting the Heaven for ceasing the Rain Pour.

    Usually the Taoist Priests or Masters will recite a few Scriptures & Mantras and the following Mantra is one of them.

    In the Mantra, you are able to see that, by reciting this Mantra, it is calling upon the Lord Sun or the Lord of Fire to be present and then, kindly invite the Lord of Water and Raining Deities to return back to their respective position. By whose Order? By the requested permission from San Qing and or Heavenly Realm (can be Yu Huang Da Tian Zun).

    Nowadays, due to the decline in the promoting of Taoist Culture and also the facts that Sciencetists proven, alot of such Rituals/Ceremonies are not being seen or frequently-conducted and so, seldom people will have chance to come across such Mantras or the Scriuptures that dedicated to the Deities that involved in such events/actions, its really a pity (but, without conducting such Rtiuals/Ceremonies, in some way, is consider Good, cos, No-long period of Raining Season affecting the Life of Chinese).

    飛天欻火。赫赫陽晶。

    太元浩師雷火精。

    結陰聚陽守雷城。

    Jie Yin Ju Yang Shou Lei Cheng

    關伯風火登淵庭。

    作風興電起幽靈。

    飄諸太華命公賓。

    Piao Zhu Tai Hua Ming Gong Bin

    上帝有敕急速行。

    收陽降雨頃刻生。

    Shou Yang Jiang Yu Qing Ke Sheng

    驅龍掣電出玄泓。

    Qu Long Ji Dian Chu Xuan Hong

    吾今奉咒急急行。

    此乃玉帝命君名。
